5 Important HR News Snippets to Know About

HR News Personio

Trying to keep up with the latest news in an ever-changing world of work? Here’s all the HR news you may have missed across the UK, Ireland and beyond.

While return-to-office mandates are losing favour, employees would rather stay in their company in a new role than leave outright. Meanwhile, four-day weeks are benefitting the environment but the cost of childcare is pricing women out of work.

What do HR leaders predict to be the biggest trends of the year? Read our report..

1. More Companies Are Resisting Return-to-Office (Fortune)

If you’re embracing hybrid work at your organisation, you’ll be glad to know that full return-to-office mandates are very much the exception, not the rule. In fact, only 3% are decreasing their availability of remote work, as even Elon Musk has reversed his initial rule for Twitter staff. And it’s paying off - a study from Mercer found that 94% of staff are more or equally productive when working from home as in-office. Read more here.

2. 70% Would Move Role Rather Than Company (HR News)

Good news for those of us who focus on retention as part of our overarching goals – according to HR News, 80% of employees are open to a new role in 2023. The reassuring part? Some 70% said they would rather retrain for a position within their current company than to leave it completely. Interestingly, 60% said they would not apply for a role in or out of their current company if it did not involve upskilling opportunities. Read more here.

3. Childcare Costs Move Women Out of Work (The Guardian)

Unfortunately, a report by PWC found that the UK has dropped five places to be ranked 14th out of 34 countries in an analysis of women’s opportunities at work. In fact, the gender pay gap is widening four times faster in the UK than average for the OECD. The report also cited the fact that childcare costs are some of the highest in the region as a major barrier for women. Childcare costs currently sit at a third of a family’s income on minimum wage. 4. 4-Day Weeks Significantly Benefit the Climate (BBC)

While the four-day working week trial resulted in higher productivity and happier employees, another benefit has emerged – a 10% reduction in hours can reduce your carbon footprint by 8.6%. This is not just due to a lack of commuting but also due to low-carbon activities such as staying at home and hiking. It also caused a shift to more environmentally-friendly behaviours such as buying eco-friendly products and being more careful with their recycling habits. Read more here.

5. Technology is HR’s Most Important Investment (Gartner)

A recent study found that nearly half (46%) of HR leaders cited HR technology as their top investment priority, for the second year in a row. It was followed closely by staffing and recruiting (45%), total rewards (41%) and learning and development (41%). Research shows that the yearly spend on HR administration increased from $155 (£128/€145) per employee in 2021 to $194 (£160/€182) per employee in 2022. Read more here.
