Data Platform Engineer (d/f/m)
Personio's intelligent HR platform helps small and medium-sized organizations unlock the power of people by making complicated, time-consuming tasks simple and efficient. Our team of 1,500 Personios is building user-friendly products that delight our 15,000+ customers and their 1.5 million employees. Ready to make an impact from day one?
This role requires 3 days in the office and is based in Berlin, Dublin or Munich.
We’re looking for a Data Platform Engineer (d/f/m) to join our central Data Platform & Engineering team. In this role, you’ll lead the design and scaling of our data infrastructure across AWS, Snowflake, dbt, and Airflow. You’ll make key architectural decisions, build reusable frameworks, and directly shape how teams across Personio discover, trust, and use data.
Role Responsibilities: What You'll Do
As a Data Platform Engineer, you’ll drive platform-wide impact by designing reliable, secure, and cost-efficient foundations for analytics and data products.
Own end-to-end platform design across ingestion, processing, storage, and access—develop reusable patterns and lead design reviews.
Build scalable batch and streaming systems, including reusable frameworks, monitoring, alerting, and automated data quality checks.
Write optimised, maintainable code in Python and SQL, and establish coding standards, best practices, and shared libraries.
Design and evolve security frameworks, including access controls, encryption, auditing, compliance monitoring, and data classification (GDPR).
Lead resolution of complex platform issues by designing proactive observability, incident response practices, and failure playbooks.
Drive cross-team architecture alignment, lead technical discussions with varied audiences, build consensus, and unblock execution.
Lead cross-functional initiatives with phased planning, risk mitigation, and strong stakeholder management.
Optimise cost and performance, design cost-efficient architectures and lead optimisation efforts with clear value-to-cost measurement.
Role Requirements: What You Need to Succeed
3+ years of experience in a Data Engineering, Data Platform, or similar role.
Proven ability to design scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient data pipelines and platform components.
Hands-on experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow (or equivalent).
Strong programming skills in Python (bonus: Scala or Java) and excellent SQL proficiency.
Experience with cloud platforms, ideally AWS.
Strong experience with modern data warehouse/lakehouse technologies such as Snowflake (or Redshift/Databricks).
Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., AWS CDK).
Solid understanding of data security, governance, and compliance topics, including GDPR and data classification.
Familiarity with databases and big data tools (e.g., Spark) is a plus.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a strong focus on teamwork and alignment.
