Engineering Manager (L6), Organisation Management
About Personio
At Personio, we're building the People Operating System for Europe. Our mission is to make HR effortless so teams can focus on what really matters. We serve 16,000+ customers across Europe and are scaling fast as we move towards IPO.
The Role
We're hiring a Senior Engineering Manager (L6) to lead a high-performing, senior team of software engineers within our Organization Management domain.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity at the heart of Personio's core HR platform. The team owns some of the most visible and foundational capabilities in the product - the org chart, organizational units such as teams and departments, and the legal entity system - which together shape how every customer models their company inside Personio. The work is technically rich, cross-cutting, and visible at the highest levels of the company.
You’ll inherit a stable, senior team that balances technical depth, legacy systems and working on new systems that serve our most demanding customers. You will play a key role in raising the bar on how value is delivered, how technical direction is set and followed, and how engineers are growing.
About the Team
The Organization Management area sits at the centre of Personio's core HR platform. It owns the org chart - arguably the most prominent feature every customer sees - alongside the management of teams, departments, and legal entities. Decisions made here ripple across the entire product, from access rights and admin permissions to surveys, absences, and time tracking.
This team:
Is Munich-based, with a strong in-office collaboration culture
Is highly senior and top-heavy, with two staff engineers, one lead and two seniors.
Owns both vertical capabilities (org chart, org units, legal entities) and horizontal responsibilities (providing organizational data to other teams across the platform)
Will scale from 5 to 7 engineers based on the current hiring plan
Works closely with Product, Design, and partner teams across the platform
What You'll Do
Lead, mentor, and develop a senior team of software engineers, supporting performance management, promotions, and career growth
Own delivery for a domain that underpins the rest of the Personio platform, where consistency and holistic adoption matter as much as initial shipping
Challenge what "done" really means - pushing the team and your product partners to ensure new capabilities are uniformly adopted across the whole platform, not just shipped in a single space
Partner closely with your Product Manager to argue priorities on the roadmap, distinguishing genuine customer value from toil, and grounding technical investments in business outcomes
Stay close enough to the code and the system to investigate technical complexity yourself, challenge your team on technical topics, and represent the domain credibly in cross-functional discussions
Navigate significant legacy complexity in a domain that has existed since Personio's earliest days
What We're Looking For
Proven experience as an Engineering Manager leading product teams, with a track record of growing and managing senior engineers
Strong engineering background - ideally backend or full-stack - having stopped being hands-on relatively recently (within the last year or two) rather than years ago
Comfortable going into the code, challenging lead and staff engineers on technical decisions, and digging into details rather than deferring entirely to the team
Excellent stakeholder management skills, with a strong sense of customer and business value - whether customers are internal or external
Demonstrated ability to partner with Product Management on roadmap prioritisation and to articulate why work matters in terms of customer and business outcomes
Solid performance management experience, including coaching, promoting, and addressing underperformance
A platform mindset: an instinct for consistency, reuse, and cross-cutting impact rather than narrow vertical delivery
